Point Pelee (78 / 365)

Point Pelee (78 / 365), originally uploaded by katherinebruder.

Today I had a Canadian adventure with Billy. Since he is home from Peru for the next few weeks, we got together to catch up face-to-face – no Magic Jack, no Google Talk, just old school quality time together. It was nice to spend some time together in Michigan after more than a year.

In an effort to do something fun, different, interesting and to take advantage of the beautiful, sunny weather, we ventured into Canada to go to Point Pelee National Park on Lake Erie.

Going to Canada is always an adventure, but even more so today. I didn’t have the best directions once we had crossed the border so we ended up taking the circuitous route to reach the beach but we eventually made it!

We started out by going all the way out to the point, which happened to be the most southern part of Canada and at the 42nd parallel. Apparently, in addition to Point Pelee being on the 42nd parallel, so is Rome and Barcelona.

The sky was beautiful, the water clear and the sand warm!

At the tip of the point.

After the beach, we followed a path through the woods. It turns out that many types of birds stop at Point Pelee during their migration north for the summer. Because of this (and the fact that it was a Monday afternoon), the park was full of older couples & groups out birdwatching. Almost all had binoculars with them and many had expensive and extensive camera equipment in an effort to capture a perfect shot of the birds they saw. We probably didn’t help the people we walked past on the path in their quest for looking for birds since we were talking – quiet and stealth like you need to be to go bird watching.
